About Gina

A kitchen remodel is a big job. But it can have all kinds of benefits from adding value to your home to making the space more practical. Knowing when to schedule a remodel is important. Below are some questions to help you decide whether it’s time for a new kitchen.

A good time to schedule a kitchen remodel is when you’re running out of space. Tiny kitchens can be frustrating to use – especially if two or more of you want to cook together. By considering a new kitchen layout, it may be possible to add more floor space, more countertop space and more cabinets. You could do this in the form of a kitchen extension . Alternatively, you may be able to use space from another room by knocking down an interior wall. An architect could help you explore your options.

Another good time to consider a new kitchen is when your decor is starting to look old-fashioned. Features like linoleum floors, tile countertops or distressed cabinets could be worth gutting out and replacing with something fresher. Alternatively, you may not like certain colours or materials that a previous owner has used within the kitchen. Take this as the opportunity to make the kitchen more to your liking.

Over time, kitchens can start to look worn. Stains that don’t come out when you scrub them can be an eyesore and are often a good sign that it’s time to fit a new kitchen. Similarly, if there are major cracks, chips or lots of scratches in your floor or countertops, you may want to consider replacing them. It’s possible that you may be able to refinish surfaces without having to replace them. However, you may decide that it’s simpler to invest in new surfaces.

If there isn’t enough light in your kitchen, it could affect the mood of the space and make cooking harder. Remodelling your kitchen could be a chance to add more light. You can add more artificial light in the form of recessed ceiling lights or track lighting. Alternatively, you could brighten up the space by installing a skylight or new windows. Take the time to explore different methods of making your kitchen brighter.

When selling a home, a brand-new kitchen can be a great way of adding value and attracting more attention from buyers. It could be worth talking to a local real estate agent to see whether they think a new kitchen could make your home more valuable and attractive. Some kitchens may already have a lot of charm – especially if they weren’t fitted too long ago – in which case there may not be any need to renovate them. It is better to remodel a kitchen that is old or has too many personal touches (such like wall murals or polarising colours), as this is more likely to add value and attract buyers.

Remodelling a kitchen can be expensive. It’s often worth getting a few quotes so that you can work out exactly how much a new kitchen will cost you, and whether you can cover this cost. Most people do not have the savings to carry out a kitchen remodel and so have to take out a home improvement loan or extend their mortgage. Ideally, you don’t want to borrow too much money to the point that you’re struggling to pay it back, as you could quickly regret your new kitchen. If you are confident that you can afford it, why not get started? It’s certain to be one of the most rewarding improvements you can make.

You may want to delay installing a new kitchen if you’ve got other big costs to prioritise or guests staying around shortly. A kitchen makeover can be expensive and disruptive, so you need to time it right. That said, there may never be a perfect time to focus your attention wholly on a kitchen remodel if you’ve got a busy life. Sometimes you need to be willing to deal with a bit of temporary disruption to make it work. The beginning of the year could be a good time to get started. Alternatively, you could plan a makeover while you are away on holiday (providing that you’re happy to let the contractors go in and out of your house without you there).
