About Gina

Those who live near to the seafront, large rivers or lakes or even heavy rainfall must always prepare for the chance of flooding. Of course, depending on where you live, this may be more or less of an issue. A house atop a hill will be less likely to suffer from flooding thanks to the natural slope of the land, while those at the bottom may not be near water but could suffer if not properly diverting it away during storms.

So, for some people, flooding is a real possibility. A bad year in some locations can mean that many homes are flooded and flood defences are overcome. For many people, this is never a real problem. For most people, however, a natural mix of planning against this kind of issue, especially in wet climates, is something that they consider a normal part of their yearly house maintenance.

In this post, we’ll discuss a few essential measures you can utilize in order to lessen the likelihood of suffering from home flooding, from both internal and external sources. With that in mind, please consider:

A Proper Guttering System

A proper guttering system designed to take heavy rainfall away from a building is essential. It can then healthily deposit that water in drains which will then help absolve the problem. That said, repairing your gutters and keeping them in good condition is absolutely essential. For instance, gutters that may not be aligned correctly can cause water to leak and that in itself may cause a problem.

Additionally, you’ll no doubt find that cleaning gutters correctly, especially in areas known for their downpour, is an essential maintenance effort that should be applied in order to prevent debris from building and the entire guttering system from becoming damaged. Sometimes, integrating land drains of your own can be helpful, such as water runoff systems for rural land. This is especially important in areas where water may tend to pool otherwise.

Cleaned Drains

It’s essential to make sure that drains are cleaned , too. Debris can more easily build on the floor and this can prevent drains from carrying the water along with it. The worst outcome is that a drain becomes fully blocked, which leads to a flood occurring where it had no need to. Making sure the drain provisions around your property are cared for is essential, as is sweeping leaves on the edge of your property during the autumn if your council hasn’t attended to that yet.

Flood Defenses

Flood defences are sometimes enacted by the local council or planning authority. These may take the shape of installed industrial borders against rivers that are known to grow and flood during times of great downpour. These can often be adjusted with raised slats that help withstand the pressure of the river growing and can prevent many houses from flooding.

Flood defences of your own can of course help in an emergency situation, too. After all, it might not just be the local river that could cause flooding. This is why people who own at-risk homes will almost always have some kind of provision backed up. This may include a range of sandbags they can place on their drive or in an entrance where floods may come, just to prevent the water level from creeping up the driveway. This isn’t a perfect solution, but it can certainly help.

Other flood defences can include flood-resistant window fittings which can withstand a certain level of pressure and are watertight when closed. Flood-resistant doors are sometimes recommended, but they are less reliable, as the need to continually open and close such as door of course prevents it from being truly watertight. For some, industrial pumps placed in their garden can help them resolve pools of water should they occur. Using a mix and match of appropriate solutions is essential depending on your needs and the needs of your household.

A Maintained Plumbing System

Of course, it’s also important to make sure internal leaks or plumbing issues are attended to as quickly as possible. This is because a leak in your home can sometimes lead to flooding, which of course, can cause thousands in property damage.

If you’re not trained, always making sure a specialist is called out to resolve your plumbing issue should be a natural first choice. This way, you don’t have to risk making a mistake or ignoring issues until they become a real problem.
